San Francisco Silent Film Festival
Most silent films disintegrated into brittle nitrate dust, so this batch of golden silents — with live musical accompaniment, as was the custom — are truly rare fruits to be enjoyed. The opulent Castro Theatre screens Cecil B. DeMille's emotional adaptation of Carmen; Lon Chaney as a vengeful criminal amputee in The Penalty; and Alice in Disneyland, which includes a personal appearance by its star, Virginia Davis McGhee. The series closes with a new print of Go West, a comedy classic from lead-lidded genius Buster Keaton, whose astounding physical stunts rival those of Jackie Chan.
